Description

This guitar was made by Domingo Esteso, who along with fellow worker Santos Hernandez (from the Manuel Ramirez shop), was one of the greatest makers of the first half of the twentieth century. It has a very clean, clear and pure quality to the sound, a very strong fundamental with very controlled overtones, and a very natural, "woody" quality of sound, very stylish, refined and alluring. Even by modern standards today, the volume of this instrument is huge, and the rich, played-in quality of sound is something that can only be found in an instrument of this vintage. In the hands, it feels very expressive and responsive to the most subtle of changes in the players touch. This is a particularly elaborate Esteso with arguably one of his most beautiful rosettes as well as bone binding in place of wood. The guitar was recently repaired in Madrid by Felipe Conde, the great-nephew of Domingo Esteso. It was also previously owned by the great Cuban guitarist Juan Mercadal. A very fine and rare example from this very collectible builder.
