Description

Mario Gropp works side-by-side with his father, Armin Gropp in the "Musikstadt" ("Music City") of Markneukirchen in Germany's far eastern state of Saxony. For over 300 years, this town has been home to an incredibly prolific history of musical instrument building and a unique school of guitar makers that includes no-one less than C.F. Martin and perhaps the town's biggest hero - Richard Jacob Weissgerber. The style of guitars that continue to be built there fuse Spanish-style building with the 18th and 19th century Viennese styles most championed by Stauffer. This particular instrument is an homage to Weissgerber and features a dovetail-joint at the heel, "open" headstock, oval rosette, and V-joint (with relief) where the neck joins the head. It is also fitted with six single "Weissgerber" tuners by Rubner and two-piece slanted saddle. Sound is a unique blend of warm, played-in Spanish style with a firm, clear and balanced Germanic quality. Playability is excellent with a lovely neck shape and soft string tension. Top is French polish and the body is done in oil - very practical for regular use. Overall a very interesting and lovely instrument built in a fascinating city with a deep musical history.
