Description

This is an excellent and very impressive guitar all around - his 111th to date! As with all of Jake's guitars, workmanship is clean, simple and refined. The sound itself is textured, with ample overtones yet excellent clarity and balance - a wonderful synthesis of the Spanish and Northern European styles. The body of the guitar is very light in weight making it respond like an early 20th century Spanish guitar, but it has a slightly "weightier" neck and stiff neck joint which gives it noticeably increased sustain, balanced across all registers. Playability is a breeze with a very easy and comfortably shaped neck profile. Suitable for any size auditorium - also a wonderful recording instrument. Materials are lovely including a beautiful spruce top and an interesting set of maple for the (3 piece) back and sides which has a nice back story - it was given to Jake by a violin/cello maker who was retiring. This maker said that he bought it at the beginning of his career decades earlier, so it is incredibly well-seasoned and aged, of a quality that has become harder to find nowadays. Other materials include Honduran rosewood for the bindings, walnut head veneer and bridge, lightweight laminated fingerboard, and strutting designed to give extra stability to the guitar and increases the bass frequencies. The guitar weighs 1200g and the resonance is set around D#-E. Jake also cites Antonio de Torres as a particularly strong influence in this guitar as he spent a good amount of time contemplating Torres' life while building it.
