Description

For performers and collectors alike, the name Ignacio Fleta (1897-1977) ranks among the elite handful of 20th century luthiers. His colorful guitar-making career spanned nearly half a century and his legacy has continued to the present day, with the instruments of his two sons Gabriel and Francisco, and now grandson Gabriel Jr. Countless scores of the finest players in the world have played these instruments, including Andres Segovia, John Williams, Angel Romero, Turibio Santos, Alirio Diaz, Jose Rey de la Torre and Marcelo Kayath among just a few.

In typical Fleta fashion for this period, this example from 1963 features a spruce soundboard with back and sides of Indian rosewood. The sound is incredible - deep and complex with great dynamic range and balance. It also has a firmness in the fundamental which provides great projection and clarity in larger venues. It also has the classic Fleta tone which is a haunting, mysterious and dark sound, with substantial power. It has unusually good separation of voices even when playing chordal passages. The condition of the guitar is great - apart from two hairline cracks on either side of the fingerboard and two on the back (all expertly repaired from the outside), it is in otherwise totally original condition with only very modest signs of playing wear. Thanks to having just been re-fretted by German Vazquez Rubio, it is exceptionally playable - ready for recording studio or concert stage. This is a great sounding and playing guitar from Fleta's golden 'spruce' era - players like Andres Segovia, John Williams and Angel Romero were concertizing and recording on Fleta instruments from this very period, making this sound one of the most beloved and cherished to modern admirers and aficionados of the classical guitar.
