Benito Ferrer (1845-1925) is considered to be the father of the Granada school of guitar making, a tradition that has grown over the years to include such prominent makers as Manuel de la Chica, Antonio Marin, Rafael Moreno Rodriguez and dozens of other well-known names. Perhaps the most famous Ferrer guitar is known to have been played by the young Andres Segovia from 1904 until the iconic 1912 Manuel Ramirez guitar (made by Santos Hernandez in the Ramirez shop) was gifted to him by Ramirez in 1913. It was also a Ferrer guitar from 1906 that was used by Manuel De Falla while composing his beautiful Homenaje for solo guitar.
This is hands-down, the lightest guitar in the shop - if not the lightest guitar we've ever seen! It's an amazingly well-preserved example of a great "tablao-style" guitar that was very popular at the turn of the 19th/20th century. It's extremely lively with surprisingly huge volume, instantaneous response and a plump, robust, gorgeous sound. And delightfully, it has copious amounts of that mysterious "old-world" tone that only a guitar over 100 years old can possess. Playability is super easy - it's currently concert ready with great setup and easy action. Despite all the external wear, it is in amazing condition - only 1 top crack that was lightly glued and has a small cloth patch underneath. There are the two cracks on either side of the fingerboard that have also been replaced. Back and sides are clean from the inside, and interestingly Ferrer penciled in his name in large, calligraphic style on the inside of the back. This is a very rare find and is priced attractively.
