Description
David "Jose" Rubio is well known for his eclectic output of fine musical instruments – in addition to guitars, Rubio was a master craftsman of Baroque and Renaissance "period" instruments, including lutes, viols, cellos and harpsichords. He is arguably the most important luthier to emerge from England – he is well known for his work with Julian Bream, beginning in the mid 1960s. This 9 course lute from 1966 was built during this very period while he was still in New York (Bream played on Rubio guitars made in 1965 and 1966 and a Rubio lute from 1967), before he returned to his native England. This lute is an excellent example of Rubio's creative and elegant craftsmanship, featuring an ornately carved bridge and soundhole, 9 stave Maple back and inlaid neck and head. It has 9 courses, the first two courses (and optional 9th) are single. It also has inlaid frets. Condition-wise, there are no known repairs or cracks, only normal playing wear. It is a particularly beautiful example of Rubio's work and would be a great instrument for the guitarist seeking a more authentic quality of sound when playing lute music from the Renaissance into the Baroque - with the additional courses, this music can be played as written, requiring no arranging. Rubio lutes enter the market very infrequently so this is a rare opportunity to own a masterfully crafted and great sounding instrument by one of the great masters of the twentieth century. Includes the original custom-fitted case.
