Guitar and Domra Duo recorded in Moscow
Our good friend and luthier, Vladimir Druzhinin, shared three videos with us that were recorded in Moscow. These videos feature Sergei Gudelev playing guitar and Victoria Aretinskaya playing the domra. The domra is a traditional Russian string instrument, belonging to the lute family, often used in folk and classical music. It has a round, bowl-shaped body and a short neck. Sergei played on a new 2025 Vladimir Druzhinin guitar. These videos were shot by Ayrat Abdullin.
The duo recorded three preludes for piano (two, eight, and ten), by Evgeny Svetlanov. Svetlanov is world-renowned primarily as a Soviet and Russian conductor. However, his work as a composer and performer is often overshadowed by his very successful conducting career.
Here’s what the duo had to say about this project:
“Svetlanov's music is very beautiful and accessible. Deeply influenced by popular imagery, it is reminiscent of Russian folklore. For this reason, we perform these pieces in a somewhat unusual duo. The domra, a traditional Russian folk instrument, has a bright, very characteristic timbre. Its recognizable lyrical ‘legato’ sound is achieved through a tremolo technique. In this video, you will hear a three-string domra built in 1976 by Viktor Khromov (1932–2005).”
